John Murdoch wakes up in a hotel bathtub with no memory of who he is. He receives a call from Dr. Daniel Schreber, warning him to escape the hotel to avoid a group of men chasing him. In the room, Murdoch finds the body of a woman who was killed in a ritualistic manner and a blood-stained knife. He flees just as a group of pale men in trench coats, known as “the Strangers,” arrives.
As he pieces together clues, Murdoch discovers his own name and learns he has a wife named Emma. Meanwhile, Police Inspector Frank Bumstead suspects Murdoch of a series of murders committed across the city, though Murdoch has no recollection of committing them. While being pursued by the Strangers, Murdoch realizes he possesses psychokinesis—the ability to manipulate reality at will, a power the Strangers also wield, which they refer to as “tuning.” Using this ability, he manages to evade them.
Murdoch explores the strange, timeless city, where perpetual nighttime goes unnoticed by its inhabitants. At midnight, he observes everyone falling asleep except himself, while the Strangers physically restructure the city and alter people’s identities and memories. Murdoch learns he hails from a coastal town called Shell Beach, a place everyone seems to know but cannot locate for various reasons.
In an attempt to track him down, the Strangers implant one of their own, Mr. Hand, with Murdoch’s memories. Inspector Bumstead eventually catches Murdoch but begins to doubt his guilt and questions the bizarre nature of the city. Together, they confront Schreber, who reveals that the Strangers are extraterrestrial beings using human corpses as hosts. With a hive mind, the Strangers are conducting experiments on humans to study individuality, hoping it will provide insights to save their dying race.
