Description: Risa Saraswati, a young girl, lives with her wealthy and busy mother, Elly, who works as a teacher. Her father works abroad and visits only twice a year. Risa is portrayed as an introvert due to her troubled family life. On her eighth birthday, her mother fails to celebrate with her, so Risa decides to celebrate alone, wishing for new friends to end her loneliness. Suddenly, she hears a boy singing “Boneka Abdi,” a Sundanese song believed to summon ghosts. She then encounters a group of Indonesian-speaking Dutch children: Peter, Janshen, William, and Hans. These children are spirits of individuals who died during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies and can only be seen by Risa. Upon Elly’s request, a shaman named Asep explains to Risa that her ability to see these spirits stems from her sensitivity to the scent of danur, the odor of the dead. This revelation frightens Risa, prompting her to try to forget about the children.
Years later, 17-year-old Risa returns to her childhood home with her younger sister Riri and cousin Andri, assigned by Elly, who is now overseas, to care for her ailing grandmother until a nurse arrives. While exploring the house, Riri discovers a ficus tree the ghostly children had once warned Risa to avoid. That night, a nurse named Asih arrives, and Risa becomes suspicious of her, especially due to her instant rapport with Riri.
Andri soon reveals he cannot see Asih, leading them to conclude she is a ghost. In a supernatural turn of events, Asih kidnaps Riri and attacks Risa’s grandmother and Andri, rendering them unconscious. Risa contacts Elly to report Asih’s malevolent actions. Desperate, Risa plays “Boneka Abdi” on her dusty piano, summoning the ghostly children once more. Together, they venture into the spiritual realm, where Asih attempts to drown Riri in a bathtub. Meanwhile, Elly consults Asep, who explains that Asih is the spirit of a woman who committed suicide after killing her newborn child born out of wedlock.
