**Plot Summary:**
Danny Collins, an aging 1970s rock star played by Al Pacino, struggles to let go of his wild lifestyle. His life takes a turn when his manager, Frank Grubman (Christopher Plummer), discovers a 40-year-old undelivered letter from John Lennon. Inspired by the letter, Danny decides to change his ways and reconnect with his estranged adult son, Tom Donnelly (Bobby Cannavale). Tom, born from a past casual relationship, lives with his wife Samantha (Jennifer Garner) and their seven-year-old daughter, Hope (Giselle Eisenberg), and is expecting another child.
Seeking a fresh start, Danny moves to New Jersey, staying at a Hilton hotel where he charms the staff and begins pursuing the hotel manager, Mary (Annette Bening). He also tries to set up her assistant Jaime (Melissa Benoist) on a date.
Initially, Tom rejects Danny, feeling abandoned by him. However, Danny persists, helping Hope, who has ADHD, enroll in a specialized school. Danny also learns that Tom has been diagnosed with leukemia, inherited from his late mother. He starts attending doctor’s appointments with Tom, gradually earning his son’s trust.
Motivated by his growing bond with Mary and his newfound family, Danny begins writing new songs and books a performance at a small club. However, when the audience demands his old hits, Danny falters, delivering a lackluster show. Devastated, he relapses into his old habits, damaging his relationships with Mary and his family.
A confrontation with Tom leads Danny to reveal the leukemia diagnosis, shocking Samantha. Feeling betrayed, Tom cuts ties with Danny, leaving the former rock star to face the consequences of his actions.
