Description: In 1863, Lieutenant John J. Dunbar is wounded during a battle at St. David’s Field in Tennessee. Preferring death over losing his foot to amputation, he rides a horse directly toward Confederate lines. Despite multiple shots fired at him, he remains unharmed, and his daring action allows the Union Army to launch a successful attack. Dunbar is honored for his bravery and receives medical treatment that saves his foot. He is later given the horse he rode, named Cisco, and offered his choice of posting. Dunbar chooses to be transferred to the western frontier, wanting to witness it before it vanishes.
Dunbar is sent to Fort Hays, commanded by the unstable Major Fambrough, who dislikes Dunbar’s enthusiasm. Fambrough assigns Dunbar to the remote outpost of Fort Sedgwick before taking his own life. Dunbar travels to the fort with Timmons, a supply carrier, only to find it abandoned. Despite the danger posed by nearby Native American tribes, Dunbar decides to stay and maintain the post alone.
He begins restoring the fort and enjoys the solitude, documenting his experiences in a journal. Timmons is killed by Pawnee warriors on his way back to Fort Hays. With both Fambrough and Timmons dead, no other soldiers are aware of Dunbar’s assignment, and no reinforcements arrive.
Dunbar encounters his Sioux neighbors when they try to steal his horse and intimidate him. Realizing the risk of being a target, he decides to visit the Sioux camp to establish communication. Along the way, he discovers Stands with a Fist, a white woman adopted by the tribe, who is harming herself while grieving for her deceased husband. Dunbar takes her back to the Sioux camp, where she is cared for. Initially hostile, the tribe gradually begins to respect Dunbar.
