**Storyline:**
Dr. Stephen Fleming, a physician turned politician, lives in London with his wife Ingrid and their daughter Sally. Their adult son, Martyn, a young journalist, resides elsewhere in the city. At a social event, Stephen meets Anna Barton, the daughter of a British diplomat and a Frenchwoman with multiple marriages. Anna reveals she is a close friend of Martyn’s, and an immediate attraction develops between her and Stephen.
Later, Martyn introduces Anna to his parents as his romantic partner, unaware of the growing tension between his father and Anna. Despite their familial ties, Stephen and Anna’s affair begins shortly after they meet privately. Their relationship intensifies, even as Martyn and Ingrid remain oblivious.
Anna shares a tragic story about her brother, who committed suicide at 16 due to unrequited feelings of possessiveness and incestuous desire. She explains that damaged individuals are dangerous and expresses her hatred for possessiveness.
Stephen’s obsession with Anna grows uncontrollably. He impulsively leaves a conference to meet her in Paris, where she is staying with Martyn.
