Description: Brad Whitaker, a mild-mannered radio executive, strives to be a good stepfather to his wife Sara’s two children, Megan and Dylan. Despite a past accident that left him seemingly infertile, Brad begins to bond with the children. Dylan confides in him about being bullied at school, and Megan asks Brad to accompany her to a father-daughter dance. However, their growing connection is interrupted when Sara’s ex-husband and the children’s biological father, Dusty Mayron, unexpectedly announces his visit after discovering Sara’s marriage to Brad.
Though Sara is hesitant, Brad believes it’s important for the kids that he and Dusty establish a respectful relationship. Upon arrival, Dusty’s imposing presence and charm with the children immediately intimidate Brad. Despite Sara’s warnings about Dusty’s true intentions, he convinces Brad to let him stay longer. It soon becomes clear that Dusty aims to win back Sara and push Brad out of the family.
Dusty repeatedly outshines Brad—whether by gifting the children a dog, completing a treehouse Brad had planned to build, or making Brad appear racist. He even tries to drive a wedge between Brad and Sara by suggesting a visit to a fertility doctor, hoping Brad’s infertility will lead Sara back to him. Surprisingly, the visit reveals Brad’s improved sperm count, a possible result of Dusty’s “territorial” behavior, giving Brad and Sara hope for a child together.
Despite a temporary truce after Brad and Dusty work together to teach Dylan self-defense, Dusty later reveals his ongoing plan to remove Brad from the family. Desperate to compete, Brad spends exorbitant amounts on extravagant early Christmas gifts, including a pony and expensive NBA game tickets.
The story highlights the complexities of blended families, showcasing Brad’s determination to prove his worth as a stepfather while navigating Dusty’s manipulative efforts to reclaim his place in the family.
