Description: Cyrano is a 2021 musical romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright, with a screenplay by Erica Schmidt. Based on Schmidt’s 2018 stage musical adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play “Cyrano de Bergerac,” the story follows Cyrano de Bergerac as he secretly loves the beautiful Roxanne. However, Roxanne has fallen for another man named Christian de Neuvillette. Aware that his social status and appearance prevent him from winning her heart, Cyrano uses his poetic talents to help Christian express his love for Roxanne, bringing the two together.
The film features a star-studded cast, including Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Ben Mendelsohn. It had its world premiere at the 48th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2021, and was released theatrically in Los Angeles on December 17, 2021. The movie is set for wider release in the United States on January 28, 2022, and in the United Kingdom on February 25, 2022.
Cyrano received positive reviews from critics and earned nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Peter Dinklage) at the 79th Golden Globe Awards. The film’s music was composed by members of the band The National, who also created the original score for the stage musical.
Produced by Working Title Films, Cyrano was acquired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in August 2020. Alongside Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett reprising their roles from the stage production, the film also stars Ben Mendelsohn and Kelvin Harrison Jr., with Bashir Salahuddin joining the cast later.
