Description: In 1954 Baltimore, Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker leads a group of “drapes,” including his sister Pepper, a teenage mother; Mona “Hatchet Face” Malnorowski, who has a facial disfigurement; Wanda Woodward, embarrassed by her conventional parents; and Milton Hackett, Hatchet Face’s devoted boyfriend. Cry-Baby’s ability to shed a single tear captivates many girls. One day, Allison Vernon-Williams, a girl tired of her “square” life, approaches him, and the two fall in love. Cry-Baby later visits the “square” part of town for a talent show hosted by Allison’s grandmother. Despite her grandmother’s doubts, Allison attends a party with Cry-Baby at Turkey Point, a local hangout for the drapes. They bond over their shared experiences of being orphans—Cry-Baby’s parents were executed, and Allison’s parents died in separate plane crashes. Allison’s jealous boyfriend, Baldwin, starts a riot, and Cry-Baby is wrongly blamed and sent to prison. Meanwhile, Lenora Frigid, who harbors feelings for Cry-Baby, falsely claims to be pregnant with his child, leading Allison to feel betrayed and reconnect with Baldwin. In prison, Cry-Baby gets a teardrop tattoo as a permanent reminder of Allison, vowing that this tear will last forever.
