A drug trafficker orchestrates a multi-cartel Fentanyl smuggling operation between Canada and the U.S. Simultaneously, an architect recovering from oxycodone addiction investigates her son’s involvement with narcotics. Meanwhile, a university professor uncovers startling truths about his research employer, a pharmaceutical company with significant government ties, developing a new “non-addictive” painkiller.
As a debut project for filmmaker Nicholas Jarecki, who handled multiple roles including writing, directing, and casting, the film presents an intriguing story. However, it falls short of delivering the expected thrills of a drama labeled as a “thriller.” The intertwining plots, while cohesive, suffer from technical and pacing issues, with a runtime of 118 minutes feeling somewhat dragged. Certain scenes could have benefited from faster pacing or trimming. Despite these flaws, Jarecki’s direction is commendable, and the score effectively complements the narrative, though it could have incorporated more intense, thrilling elements.
Based on true events, the film adds a layer of shock value, making it a worthwhile watch despite its shortcomings. While it earns a solid 7/10 rating, it may not be a film many would revisit. Overall, Crisis is a decent effort, especially considering Jarecki’s multiple roles as a newcomer in the industry.
