**Storyline:**
Nick Young and his girlfriend Rachel Chu, an economics professor at New York University, travel to Singapore to attend the wedding of Nick’s best friend, Colin, to Araminta. In Singapore, Rachel reconnects with her college friend Peik Lin and her family, who are astonished to learn Rachel is dating Nick. Peik Lin reveals that Nick’s family is extraordinarily wealthy and prominent in high society. During a dinner at the Young estate, Nick introduces Rachel to his mother, Eleanor. Meanwhile, Nick’s cousin Astrid discovers her husband Michael, who comes from a more modest background, has been unfaithful. Rachel senses Eleanor’s disapproval of her.
At Araminta’s bachelorette party, Rachel meets Amanda, Nick’s ex-girlfriend, who subtly suggests Rachel may struggle to fit into their elite world due to her more humble origins. Rachel’s hotel room is later vandalized by other attendees who accuse her of being a gold-digger, but she finds comfort in Astrid’s support.
