The story follows 28-year-old billionaire currency speculator Eric Packer as he travels across Manhattan in his luxurious stretch limousine to visit his barber. Along the way, he engages with various visitors who discuss life’s meaning and trivial matters. Traffic jams are caused by the President’s visit and the funeral of Eric’s favorite rap artist, whose music he plays in his private elevator. Despite significant financial losses during the day, Eric fantasizes about purchasing the Rothko Chapel. He meets his wife, Elise, several times, but she declines intimacy, leading to their separation as his wealth crumbles.
Anti-capitalist protests erupt on the streets, with activists targeting Eric’s limo and eventually assaulting him. Amidst this chaos, Eric learns that an assassin is after him, yet he remains oddly passive about the threat. Throughout the day, his doctor examines him, revealing an asymmetrical prostate, and his fortune continues to plummet. As his world unravels, Eric kills his bodyguard and arrives at the barber, who knew his father. The barber cuts Eric’s hair and gives him his gun, as Eric’s life spirals out of control.
