Description: Rebecca “Becky” Bloomwood, a passionate shopaholic, lives in New York City with her best friend Suze. Despite working as a journalist for a gardening magazine, she aspires to join the fashion magazine Alette. On her way to an interview with Alette, she impulsively buys a green scarf but has her credit card declined. She convinces a hot dog vendor to exchange her check for cash by claiming the scarf is a gift for her sick aunt. A stranger, later revealed to be Luke Brandon, offers her the $20 she needs for the scarf.
At the interview, Rebecca learns the position has been filled internally but is informed about an open role at Successful Saving magazine, which could eventually lead to Alette. She interviews with Luke Brandon, the editor of Successful Saving, who happens to be the man who helped her earlier. She tries to hide the scarf but fails when his assistant returns it to her. Feeling embarrassed, Rebecca leaves.
That night, after drinking, she and Suze write letters to both magazines, but Rebecca accidentally mails them to the wrong places. Impressed by the letter meant for Alette, Luke hires her. Instead of working on her assignment, Rebecca attends a clothing sale and discovers a cashmere coat she bought is not genuine. This inspires her column, which she submits to Luke. Reluctant to use her real name, Rebecca adopts the pseudonym “The Girl in the Green Scarf,” and her article becomes an instant success.
