Description: After his wife Theresa undergoes a mastectomy, Nathan Gardner relocates his family—his children Lavinia, Benny, and Jack—to his late father’s farm. One night, a radiant meteor crashes into their front yard, startling Jack. The next day, hydrologist Ward Phillips, along with the mayor and sheriff of the nearby town of Arkham, arrives to inspect the mysterious object. That same night, during a storm, Nathan and Lavinia witness the meteor being struck by multiple lightning bolts.
Ward discovers that the groundwater has developed an oily sheen and tests it. When the test strips emit a glowing color, he warns the Gardners to avoid consuming the water. While informing a nearby resident, Ezra, about the contamination, Ward is shown a recording of strange sounds emanating from beneath Ezra’s house. Meanwhile, Jack becomes obsessed with the farm’s well, claiming to communicate with a “friend” inside and noticing bizarre plant growths and insects. A news crew arrives to interview Nathan about the meteor but finds it has inexplicably disappeared.
Later, Theresa accidentally cuts off two of her fingers while preparing dinner. Nathan rushes her to the hospital, leaving Benny in charge. At Nathan’s request, Benny goes out to secure the farm’s alpacas but returns late at night, claiming time seemed to vanish. Lavinia tries repeatedly to contact Nathan, but their calls are disrupted. When Nathan and Theresa return, Nathan lashes out at his children with uncharacteristic anger.
Nathan becomes increasingly frustrated after discovering his recent harvest is inedible, while Theresa loses a work client due to a failing internet connection, leading to a heated argument between them. That same night, Lavinia attempts a Wiccan ritual to save her family, injuring herself in the process.
