Description: Colonia, also known as The Colony in the UK, is a 2015 historical thriller directed by Florian Gallenberger. The film, co-produced by companies from the UK, Germany, Luxembourg, and France, stars Emma Watson, Daniel Brühl, and Michael Nyqvist. Set during the 1973 Chilean military coup, the story revolves around the infamous “Colonia Dignidad,” a cult led by German preacher Paul Schäfer.
The plot follows Daniel and Lena, a young German couple caught in the chaos of the coup. When Daniel is kidnapped by Pinochet’s secret police, Lena discovers he has been taken to Colonia Dignidad, a cult posing as a charitable mission. Determined to save him, Lena infiltrates the organization, only to find it is a dangerous cult from which no one has ever escaped. Daniel pretends to be disabled to avoid suspicion while uncovering the cult’s involvement in illegal activities. Together, they attempt to escape with the help of Ursel, a pregnant nurse. Although Ursel is killed during their escape, Lena and Daniel manage to reach the West German embassy, where they expose the cult’s crimes and flee the country.
Principal photography began in October 2014 in Luxembourg, with additional filming in Germany and Argentina. The movie premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in Germany in February 2016, followed by the UK and France later that year.
