Description: Howard Inlet, a successful advertising executive portrayed by Will Smith, spirals into depression following the tragic death of his young daughter. Consumed by grief, Howard isolates himself, neglecting sleep and food, and spends his days at the office constructing elaborate domino chains. His behavior jeopardizes both his health and the future of his company, as his actions lead to the loss of major clients and push the business toward bankruptcy.
Concerned for Howard and their company, his estranged friends and business partners—Whit Yardsham (Edward Norton), Claire Wilson (Kate Winslet), and Simon Scott (Michael Peña)—decide to intervene. As the majority shareholder, Howard’s refusal to cooperate has stalled their attempts to sell the company. To gain control, they hire a private investigator, Sally Price (Ann Dowd), to gather evidence of Howard’s instability.
Sally discovers three letters Howard has written to the abstract concepts of Love, Time, and Death. Armed with this discovery, Whit, Claire, and Simon devise a plan. They hire three struggling actors—Amy (Keira Knightley), Raffi (Jacob Latimore), and Brigitte (Helen Mirren)—to impersonate these concepts and confront Howard. Their aim is to film these encounters, digitally remove the actors, and use the footage to portray Howard as mentally unfit, thereby enabling them to proceed with selling the company.
As the actors prepare for their roles, they bond with Whit, Claire, and Simon, each of whom is grappling with personal challenges. Simon is secretly battling cancer, Whit struggles to reconnect with his daughter after infidelity, and Claire seeks a sperm donor after years of neglecting her personal life.
Through his interactions with the personifications of Love, Time, and Death, Howard begins to confront his grief. Meanwhile, the experience also forces Whit, Claire, and Simon to reflect on their own lives and choices. The story explores themes of loss, healing, and the unexpected ways in which people find meaning in the face of adversity.
