**Storyline:**
When North Carolina secedes from the Union on May 20, 1861, the young men of Cold Mountain join the Confederate States Army. Among them is W.P. Inman, a carpenter who has fallen in love with Ada Monroe, the daughter of a preacher who moved to Cold Mountain from Charleston, South Carolina. Their brief romance is interrupted by the war, and they share their first kiss as Inman leaves for battle. Ada promises to wait for his return.
Three years later, Inman survives the brutal Battle of the Crater. After comforting a dying acquaintance from Cold Mountain, he is wounded in another skirmish. While recovering in a hospital, a nurse reads him a letter from Ada, begging him to return home. Inspired by her words, Inman deserts the army and begins a perilous journey back to Cold Mountain.
Along the way, Inman encounters Veasey, a corrupt preacher whom he stops from drowning his pregnant lover. Exiled from his parish, Veasey joins Inman on his journey. They later meet a man named Junior, who invites them to dinner but betrays them to the Confederate Home Guard. Inman and Veasey are captured with other deserters. Veasey and the group are killed in a clash with Union cavalry, while Inman is left for dead. An elderly hermit rescues him and nurses him back to health.
Inman continues his journey and meets Sara, a grieving widow, and her infant son, Ethan. After staying the night at her cabin, they face a harrowing situation when three Union soldiers arrive, demanding food and attempting to assault Sara. Inman and Sara defend themselves, killing the soldiers.
Meanwhile, in Cold Mountain, Ada’s father has passed away, leaving her struggling to manage their farm in Black Cove. Ada’s life becomes a testament to resilience as she awaits Inman’s return, hoping against hope that he will find his way back to her.
