Description: In the early 20th century, society becomes aware of individuals possessing superhuman abilities, referred to as Powers. This leads to a government mandate requiring all Powers to register their abilities. They soon play a crucial role in the economy, particularly in constructing Lincoln City, hailed as the “City of Tomorrow.” However, as the Second Industrial Revolution unfolds and mechanization advances, Powers face marginalization and widespread prejudice, eventually being treated as second-class citizens. By the 1990s, a criminal organization known as The Trust dominates the streets with a highly addictive drug called Psyke, produced from the spinal fluid of exploited or trafficked Powers. Law enforcement adopts advanced technologies like Guardian drones and facial recognition software to combat Power-related crime, while debates over a city-wide ban on Powers intensify.
The story follows Connor Reed, a 26-year-old Class 5 Electric (electrokinetic), who cares for his mother Mary, a Cryo (cryokinetic), suffering from brain cancer. Her condition causes her abilities to behave unpredictably, and as Powers, they struggle to afford her necessary treatment. To make ends meet, Connor works as an unregistered day laborer alongside other Powers, using his abilities to install electrical wiring without safety measures. During one such job, police arrive and demand the workers disperse. In the chaos, a Pyro (pyrokinetic) is killed while attempting to flee. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, detectives Park and Davis conduct a drug raid on an apartment complex owned by Marcus Sutcliffe, a local agent of The Trust and a Reader (telepath). Nearly $1 million worth of drugs are seized, putting Sutcliffe at odds with Wesley Cumbo, his superior in The Trust, who demands payment within a week. Connor is approached by Garrett, Sutcliffe’s telekinetic underling, and his crew for a high-risk job. Despite warnings from a fellow worker, Connor agrees and participates in a chemical theft, showcasing his extraordinary power by shorting out an electric fence.
