In the Chatham Islands in 1849, American lawyer Adam Ewing witnesses the mistreatment of a Moriori slave, Autua. Autua stows away on Ewing’s ship and persuades him to advocate for his freedom. Later, Autua saves Ewing’s life when the latter is nearly poisoned by his fraudulent doctor, Henry Goose. In San Francisco, Ewing and his wife reject her father’s involvement in slavery and join the abolition movement.
In 1936, English composer Robert Frobisher becomes an assistant to aging composer Vyvyan Ayrs, using the opportunity to create his own masterpiece, “The Cloud Atlas Sextet.” While at Ayrs’s estate, Frobisher reads Ewing’s journal. Ayrs demands credit for the sextet and threatens to expose Frobisher’s bisexuality. In response, Frobisher wounds Ayrs and goes into hiding. After completing the sextet, he tragically takes his own life before his lover, Rufus Sixsmith, can reach him.
In 1973 San Francisco, journalist Luisa Rey meets Sixsmith, now a nuclear physicist, who reveals a conspiracy to cause a disaster at a nuclear reactor run by oil-industry supporter Lloyd Hooks. Before Sixsmith can provide evidence, he is killed by Hooks’s hitman, Bill Smoke. Rey discovers Frobisher’s letters to Sixsmith, similar to how Frobisher had found Ewing’s journal. She also uncovers Frobisher’s sextet in a record store. Scientist Isaac Sachs gives Rey a copy of Sixsmith’s report, but Smoke kills Sachs by sabotaging his plane and attempts to eliminate Rey by forcing her car off a bridge. With the help of Joe Napier, the plant’s head of security, Rey survives, and Smoke is ultimately killed.
The film explores interconnected lives and the enduring impact of actions across generations, blending drama, mystery, and philosophy.
