Description: In the Sonoran Desert, a team of researchers led by French scientist Claude Lacombe, along with his American interpreter and cartographer David Laughlin, uncover a group of Grumman TBM Avengers that mysteriously appeared overnight. These planes are identified as Flight 19, a training squadron that vanished in the Bermuda Triangle shortly after World War II. The aircraft are found in perfect condition but with no crew or passengers. Nearby, an elderly man with severe sunburn claims that “the sun came out at night and sang to him.” The team is further bewildered when they discover the SS Cotopaxi, a ship that had also disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle, now intact and empty in the Gobi Desert.
At the Indianapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center, air traffic controllers observe two commercial flights narrowly avoiding a mid-air collision with an unidentified flying object (UFO). When questioned, neither flight crew agrees to report the incident as a UFO sighting.
In Muncie, Indiana, three-year-old Barry Guiler wakes up to find his toys operating on their own. He follows something outside, prompting his mother, Jillian, to chase after him. Meanwhile, widespread power outages occur in the area, leading electrician Roy Neary to investigate. During his search, Roy has a close encounter with a UFO, which lightly burns his face with its bright lights as it flies over his truck. The UFO is joined by three others, and Roy, along with several police cars, pursues them. The spacecraft eventually vanish into the night sky, leaving Roy deeply fascinated and obsessed with UFOs. He becomes fixated on a mountain-like image, repeatedly creating models of it, much to the frustration of his wife, Ronnie. Jillian, too, becomes obsessed, sketching the same mountain-like shape. Soon after, she is terrorized in her home by a UFO that descends from the clouds. Despite her efforts to fend off the intruders, who activate electrical objects in the house, Barry is abducted, seemingly overjoyed by the encounter.
