Description: Clerks (1994) is a story centered around Dante Hicks, a young retail clerk working at Quick Stop Groceries in Leonardo, New Jersey. On his day off, Dante is called in to cover for another employee. Upon arriving, he discovers the security shutters are jammed with chewing gum. He improvises by hanging a sheet with the message, “I ASSURE YOU; WE’RE OPEN!” before starting his shift.
His best friend, Randal Graves, a laid-back slacker, joins him for the day while neglecting his own job at the neighboring video rental store. Together, they navigate the monotony of their customer service roles, engaging in deep conversations about movies, relationships, and life in general. Throughout the day, they encounter a variety of customers—some rude, others oddly insightful—while finding ways to escape their responsibilities, including a rooftop hockey game and a chaotic wake for one of Dante’s former lovers.
Dante finds himself conflicted between two women: his current girlfriend, Veronica, and his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin. He becomes troubled upon learning about Veronica’s past sexual experiences but ultimately decides to reconnect with Caitlin. However, an unexpected incident in the store’s bathroom leaves Caitlin emotionally shaken.
The film captures a day in the life of Dante and Randal as they grapple with mundane jobs, personal dilemmas, and the absurdity of their daily interactions. It’s a humorous yet thought-provoking exploration of life’s small struggles and existential questions.
