**Storyline:**
Hazari Pal (Om Puri) is a farmer from a rural area who relocates to Calcutta with his wife Kamla (Shabana Azmi) and their three children, hoping for a brighter future. However, their journey begins with hardship as they are swindled out of their rent money and left homeless. Struggling to find work to support his family, Hazari refuses to give up and eventually carves out a place for them in the impoverished city.

Meanwhile, Max Lowe (Patrick Swayze), a surgeon from Houston, arrives in Calcutta seeking spiritual peace after the tragic death of a young patient. His journey takes a dark turn when he is deceived by a prostitute, assaulted by thugs, and left injured on the streets, stripped of his belongings.

Hazari comes to Max’s rescue and brings him to the “City of Joy,” a slum inhabited by lepers and the underprivileged. This area becomes the new home for the Pal family and a temporary sanctuary for Max. Initially hesitant to connect with the locals, Max is encouraged by a determined Irish woman (Pauline Collins), who manages a local clinic, to assist the community. Over time, Max begins to adapt to his surroundings, finding inspiration in the resilience and hope of the slum dwellers despite their dire circumstances.
