Description: Chumbak, also known as Chumbak – The Lottery, is a 2018 Indian Marathi-language drama film directed by Sandeep Modi. Produced by Aruna Bhatia, Naren Kumar, and Cape of Good Films, the movie features renowned lyricist Swanand Kirkire in the lead role. It premiered at the 19th Mumbai Film Festival on October 13, 2017, and later garnered attention from Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who found it “honest and pure.” Kumar went on to present the film, marking his debut as a presenter in Marathi cinema. Chumbak was officially released in theaters on July 27, 2018, with its trailer unveiled on July 5, 2018.
The film tells the coming-of-age story of Baalu, a teenage restaurant worker who schemes to deceive someone to escape his difficult life and achieve his dreams. However, his plan backfires when he encounters Prasanna, a mentally unstable village man played by Swanand Kirkire. As the two embark on a transformative journey, Baalu grapples with his moral compass and aspirations. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, they are drawn to each other like magnets. The film takes viewers on a 10-minute journey to uncover the events of a fateful night, leaving them with more questions than answers.
The performances in Chumbak are exceptional, with each actor delivering their role with authenticity. Suruchi Aulakh, who plays the character Kavita, stands out with her emotionally charged and graceful portrayal. The film’s soundtrack is equally impressive, featuring the beautiful ghazal “Aisa Lagaya Dil Tumse Maine,” sung by Simi Bisht. The poetic lyrics, which express the merging of two souls, add depth to the film’s emotional narrative and perfectly complement its themes.
