Description: In the 1988 film *Child’s Play*, homicide detective Mike Norris pursues fugitive serial killer Charles Lee Ray through the streets of South Side, Chicago. During the chase, Mike shoots and wounds Charles multiple times. Charles’s accomplice, Eddie Caputo, flees alone in a getaway vehicle. Charles manages to break into a toy store, where Mike fatally shoots him. In his dying moments, Charles performs a Haitian voodoo ritual to transfer his soul into a “Good Guy” doll, causing the store to be struck by lightning and explode. Mike survives the explosion and re-enters the store, discovering Charles’s lifeless body and the doll.
The following day, Karen Barclay, a widow, unknowingly purchases the possessed doll, now named “Chucky,” from a homeless street vendor as a birthday gift for her six-year-old son, Andy. That night, Karen’s friend Maggie babysits Andy while Karen works late. After Andy goes to bed, Maggie finds Chucky sitting in front of a television broadcasting a news report about Charles Lee Ray. She places the doll back on the bed but is later struck in the face with a hammer and falls out of a window to her death. When police investigate, Detective Norris suspects Andy, but the boy insists Chucky is responsible. Karen defends her son and asks the police to leave.
The next morning, Chucky commands Andy to skip school and take the Chicago “L” train downtown. While Andy is distracted, Chucky sneaks into Eddie’s house and kills him by causing a gas explosion. Once again, Andy becomes a suspect and is admitted to a psychiatric hospital after blaming Chucky for the murder. Karen discovers the truth when she finds that Chucky has been operating without batteries. Realizing the doll is alive, Karen attempts to burn Chucky, but he violently attacks her before escaping the apartment.
