Plans for a sequel to “Chicken Run” were announced in April 2018, with production by Aardman Animations, StudioCanal, and Pathé. DreamWorks Animation did not participate due to the conclusion of their partnership with Aardman after “Flushed Away” in 2006. Sam Fell directed the project, with Paul Kewley as producer. The original writing team of Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell returned for this sequel, while Aardman co-founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton took on executive producer roles. Pre-production officially began on October 16, 2019, and Mel Gibson was not approached to reprise his role as Rocky.
