Set in the aftermath of demonetization, the story follows NRI documentary filmmaker Maya (Churni Ganguly) as she directs her first Bengali feature film, produced by her father (Barun Chanda). The lead actress, Rai Chatterjee (Koyel Mallick), a superstar in commercial Bengali cinema, steals the spotlight during filming, overshadowing her fellow actors, including her fiancé and male lead, Arindam (Abir Chatterjee), and co-actor Mou (Priyanka). Demonetization complications disrupt the shoot, and matters worsen when Rai mysteriously disappears. During her absence, the actress, a former student of a Darjeeling private school, rediscovers her childhood on adventurous escapades accompanied by her driver, Jeetu (Ritwick Chakraborty).
While the first half of the film feels slow-paced, the second half offers a more engaging narrative, skillfully weaving the plot toward a satisfying, imaginative conclusion. The cinematography by Gopi Bhagat beautifully captures the scenic landscapes of North Bengal, though the music doesn’t leave a lasting impression.
Ritwick Chakraborty, as always, delivers an electrifying performance. One standout scene features Jeetu being accused of theft, with Rai conducting a body search—a moment that highlights Ritwick’s exceptional acting skills. Abir Chatterjee, with his bearded and stylish appearance, also delivers a convincing and entertaining portrayal.
*Chhaya O Chhobi* is a film that balances its imperfections with its charm, making it a worthwhile watch.
