Description: The 2021 Russian film “Chernobyl 1986,” directed by Danila Kozlovsky, offers a dramatized take on the catastrophic nuclear disaster in Soviet Ukraine. While inspired by the success of HBO’s 2019 miniseries “Chernobyl,” this version deviates from a historical retelling, focusing instead on a fictional firefighter’s story. Kozlovsky also stars as Alexei Karpushin, a young fireman who leaves his job in Pripyat to reunite with his former lover, Olga, in Kiev. However, the Chernobyl explosion disrupts his plans, forcing him to return to Pripyat. In a heroic effort, Alexei saves his fellow firefighters from the plant’s roof and opens a crucial water valve beneath the reactor to prevent a second explosion, miraculously escaping severe radiation exposure.
