Description: Cheaper by the Dozen 2022, directed by Gail Lerner, continues the trend of remakes. Many may recall the 2003 version featuring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt, which itself was a reimagining of the 1950 film. This latest iteration presents the Baker family as a blended household, incorporating a variety of family dynamics for added depth.
The story begins with Paul Baker (Zach Braff) and Zoey Baker (Gabrielle Union), who bring together three and two children, respectively, from previous relationships. Together, they raise two sets of twins and establish a mom-and-pop business. Paul is a chef, while Zoey holds a degree in marketing. The family extends beyond the couple, including an almost live-in babysitter, Paul’s ex-wife Kate (Erika Christensen), two dogs, and later, Seth (Luke Prael), Paul’s nephew, who moves in. Zoey’s ex, Dom (Timon Kyle Durrett), a famous athlete, plays a less active role compared to Paul’s ex. Nevertheless, Paul and Zoey take the lead in managing their large family.
Mirroring the 2003 version, Paul’s career shift prompts the family to relocate to an upscale neighborhood. This move creates tension between Paul and Zoey, as his decisions overshadow their unified approach to family life. The children react differently to the move, but their dissatisfaction ultimately plunges the Baker family into crisis.
Overall, the film is a lighthearted family comedy that delivers a few laughs but is unlikely to leave a lasting impression.
