**Plot Summary**
During a skiing vacation in the French Alps, Regina “Reggie” Lampert, an American expatriate and simultaneous interpreter, confides in her friend Sylvie about her decision to divorce her husband, Charles. While there, she encounters Peter Joshua, a charming American stranger.
Upon returning to Paris, Reggie discovers her apartment emptied of all belongings. A police inspector informs her that Charles had sold their possessions before being murdered while attempting to leave the city. The money from the sale is missing. Reggie receives Charles’ travel bag, which contains a letter addressed to her, a ship ticket to Venezuela, four passports under various names, and other personal items. At Charles’ wake, only three men appear, all seemingly present to confirm his death.
Reggie is later summoned to the American Embassy, where CIA administrator Hamilton Bartholomew reveals that the three men at the wake—Herman Scobie, Leopold W. Gideon, and Tex Panthollow—were involved in a World War II OSS operation with Charles and another man, Carson Dyle. The group was tasked with delivering $250,000 in gold to the French Resistance, but they instead stole it for themselves. Carson was killed during a German ambush, and Charles betrayed the others, taking the entire sum. Now, the three survivors are desperate to recover the missing gold, as is the U.S. government. Hamilton warns Reggie that she is in grave danger, as everyone believes she knows the money’s location.
Peter arrives to assist Reggie in relocating to a hotel. Each of the three criminals confronts her separately, convinced she holds the key to the hidden fortune. Herman shocks Reggie by claiming Peter is working with them. Peter later reveals his true identity as Alexander Dyle, Carson’s brother, and explains he is seeking justice for his brother’s death, which he believes was caused by the trio.
Reggie must navigate a web of lies, deceit, and danger as she tries to uncover the truth and protect herself from those who will stop at nothing to claim the stolen gold.
