**Plot Summary:**
In 1928 Los Angeles, single mother Christine Collins returns home to find her nine-year-old son, Walter, missing. Reverend Gustav Briegleb highlights Christine’s struggle and criticizes the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for its incompetence, corruption, and the brutal actions of its “Gun Squad,” led by Chief James E. Davis. Months later, the LAPD informs Christine that Walter has been found alive. Eager to improve its public image, the department organizes a public reunion. However, Christine quickly realizes the boy returned to her is not her son. Despite her protests, Captain J.J. Jones, head of the LAPD’s Juvenile Division, pressures her to take the boy home “on a trial basis.”
Christine confronts Jones with physical inconsistencies between the returned boy and her son. Jones arranges for a doctor to examine the boy, who claims the child’s height difference and circumcision are due to trauma. Meanwhile, a newspaper publishes a story suggesting Christine is an unfit mother, which Briegleb believes was planted by the police to discredit her. Walter’s teacher and dentist confirm the boy is an impostor. When Christine shares her story with the press, Jones sends her to a psychopathic ward.
In the hospital, Christine befriends Carol Dexter, who reveals that many women there were institutionalized for challenging police authority. Dr. Steele diagnoses Christine as delusional and forces her to take medication, offering her release only if she admits her mistake about the boy. Unwilling to comply, Christine stands her ground. Meanwhile, Detective Ybarra investigates a farm in Wineville, Riverside County, where Sanford Clark, a 15-year-old boy, reveals that his uncle, Gordon Northcott, forced him to assist in the kidnapping and murder of around twenty children, including Walter.
