The story follows Xiao Ming “Bernard” Chang, an unpopular high school sophomore with a passion for basketball. Despite his interest in the sport, he struggles with his rivalry against Matt O’Neil, a star player and his former elementary school friend. Feeling threatened and humiliated after a confrontation at a party, Chang challenges Matt to a bet: if he can successfully dunk before homecoming, Matt must shave his head and give him his prized Kobe Bryant jersey. If Chang loses, he must shave his head and surrender his valuable first-edition “shadowless” Charizard Pokémon card. Kristy realizes the bet is driven by their rivalry over her but chooses to support Chang anyway.
With the help of his friend Bo, Chang begins rigorous training to improve his skills. Despite their efforts, progress is slow. Chang then discovers Deandre Cooke, a YouTuber known for his impressive dunking videos. After meeting Deandre at a Verizon store, Chang convinces him to train him, offering to improve Deandre’s YouTube content in exchange for lessons. As Chang continues to push himself, he seeks to prove his abilities and reinvent himself, even as he deals with his mother’s constant judgment and lack of understanding.
