The project began in April 2019 when Lawrence and Henry were cast in the untitled drama, with Neugebauer directing. Lawrence, Justine Polsky, Eli Bush, and Scott Rudin produced under their respective banners, and A24 handled distribution. Filming started in New Orleans in the summer of 2019 but faced delays due to Hurricane Barry and later the COVID-19 pandemic, eventually concluding in summer 2021.
Following abuse allegations, Scott Rudin was removed as a producer in April 2021. In December 2021, the Writers Guild of America awarded screenplay credit to Sanders and the duo Moshfegh and Goebel. Apple TV+ secured distribution rights in July 2022, and the film also premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 8, 2022.
