Storyline:
Sheeta, an orphan girl kidnapped by government agent Muska, is aboard an airship when it is attacked by Captain Dola and her air pirate sons, who seek Sheeta’s blue crystal pendant. In her attempt to escape, Sheeta falls from the airship but is saved by her amulet, which allows her to float gently to the ground, though unconscious. She is found by Pazu, an orphan boy, who takes her to his home in a mining town. Pazu shows Sheeta a photo of Laputa, a legendary floating city, taken by his father.
When the pirates and Muska’s men track them down, Pazu and Sheeta flee into an abandoned mine with the help of the amulet. There, Sheeta reveals her story of being abducted from her mountain home because of her necklace. An old miner named Uncle Pom shows them the glowing deposits of Aetherium surrounding them.
After leaving the mine, Sheeta shares her full name: Lucita Toel Ul Laputa. Muska captures them and takes them to his fortress, where he separates the children. Muska shows Sheeta a broken Laputan robot and, knowing her name, pressures her to reveal Laputa’s location. To protect Pazu, Sheeta orders him to leave. Heartbroken, Pazu returns home, where he encounters Dola and her sons. Together, they plan to rescue Sheeta.
Meanwhile, Sheeta recites a spell taught by her grandmother, inadvertently activating the amulet and the robot, which causes destruction until the military’s massive airship, Goliath, destroys it. Pazu saves Sheeta, but Muska seizes the amulet. Pazu, Sheeta, and the pirates return to their airship and pursue the Goliath, which is guided by Sheeta’s amulet. During the chase, Dola teaches Pazu and Sheeta how to turn the lookout into a kite for a better view. Pazu spots a swirling cloud formation in an approaching hurricane and, recognizing it from his father’s picture, declares they have found Laputa. They head into the eye of the storm to reach the legendary city.
