**Storyline:**
In 1995, Chuck Noland, a systems analyst, travels globally to address productivity issues at FedEx depots. He resides with his girlfriend, Kelly Frears, in Memphis, Tennessee, but his demanding work schedule strains their relationship. During a Christmas family dinner, Chuck is called away to resolve a work emergency in Malaysia. The FedEx cargo plane he boards encounters a violent storm and crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Chuck is the sole survivor, making it to an inflatable life raft. The following day, he washes ashore on a deserted island.
Over the next few days, several FedEx packages and the body of a FedEx pilot wash ashore. Chuck buries the pilot and attempts to signal a passing ship and escape using the damaged life raft. However, the rough surf throws him onto a coral reef, injuring his leg. Despite the challenges, Chuck manages to find enough food, water, and shelter to survive. He opens most of the FedEx packages, finding useful items, but leaves one unopened—a package adorned with golden angel wings. While trying to start a fire, Chuck cuts his hand. In frustration, he throws objects from the packages, including a Wilson volleyball, which leaves a bloody imprint. Later, Chuck calms down, draws a face on the volleyball, names it Wilson, and begins talking to it regularly.
By 1999, four years later, Chuck has adapted to life on the island, living in a cave. When a large piece of a portable toilet enclosure washes ashore, he uses the plastic to construct a sail for a raft. With the raft stocked with water and the unopened FedEx package, Chuck sets out to sea. He survives a storm but loses Wilson, who floats away. Despite his desperate attempts to retrieve Wilson, Chuck is left to mourn his loss. Shortly after, he is rescued by a passing container ship.
