Carrie White, a shy and reserved teenager, lives with her mother, Margaret White, a deeply religious and fanatical woman. The story begins with Margaret giving birth to Carrie in her home, initially intending to harm the baby but ultimately deciding to raise her. Years later, Carrie attends Ewen High School in Maine, where she struggles to fit in.
After a gym class, Carrie experiences her first menstrual period while showering. Unprepared and unaware of what is happening, she panics, thinking she is seriously ill. The other girls in the locker room mock her, throwing tampons and pads at her. Chris Hargensen, a persistent bully, records the incident on her smartphone and uploads it online. The gym teacher, Miss Desjardin, comforts Carrie and sends her home.
At home, Margaret scolds Carrie, believing menstruation is sinful. She demands that Carrie avoid showering with her peers, but when Carrie refuses, Margaret becomes violent, locking her in a closet used for prayer. While trapped, Carrie begins to manifest telekinetic powers, causing strange phenomena like a bleeding crucifix.
Carrie discovers her telekinetic abilities and learns to control them. Meanwhile, Miss Desjardin punishes the girls who tormented Carrie, giving them the choice between severe detention or suspension, which would bar them from the upcoming prom. Chris refuses to cooperate and is suspended.
Sue Snell, one of the girls involved, feels remorseful and persuades her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to invite Carrie to the prom as a gesture of kindness. Carrie accepts the invitation and creates her own prom dress at home. However, Margaret tries to prevent Carrie from attending. When Carrie insists, she uses her telekinetic powers to assert her independence.
The story builds toward the prom, where Carrie’s life takes a dramatic and tragic turn.
