**Storyline:**
Set during the Christmas season of 1952, the film follows Therese Belivet, an aspiring photographer working at Frankenberg’s department store in Manhattan. She encounters Carol Aird, a sophisticated woman shopping for a doll for her daughter, Rindy. Therese suggests a model train set instead, and Carol purchases it. When Carol leaves her gloves behind, Therese mails them back using the sales slip with Carol’s details.
Therese’s boyfriend, Richard, plans a trip to France, hoping to marry her, but she feels uncertain about their relationship. Meanwhile, Carol is navigating a tense divorce from her husband, Harge. After Carol invites Therese to lunch, the two develop a bond. Carol invites Therese to her New Jersey home, where Harge unexpectedly arrives to take Rindy to Florida for Christmas. He grows suspicious of Therese, knowing Carol’s past relationship with her friend Abby.
As Carol’s divorce intensifies, Harge seeks to use a “morality clause” to gain full custody of Rindy, threatening to expose Carol’s sexuality. To escape the stress, Carol embarks on a road trip and invites Therese to join her. Richard confronts Therese, accusing her of being infatuated with Carol and predicting that Carol will lose interest in her.
