Carl’s Date, previously titled Dug Days: Carl’s Date, is a 2023 American computer-animated short film from Pixar Animation Studios, written and directed by Bob Peterson and produced by Kim Collins. The film features the voices of Ed Asner (in one of his final roles before his passing in 2021) and Bob Peterson. The story revolves around Carl Fredricksen, who hesitantly goes on his first date since the loss of his late wife, Ellie. Unfamiliar with the dating scene, Carl is unsure how to proceed. Although initially intended to debut on Disney+ as part of the Dug Days series, the short was released in theaters on June 16, 2023, alongside Pixar’s Elemental.
In the film, Carl trains his dog, Dug, at home when he receives a phone call from Ms. Meyers, an elderly resident of a nursing home. During the call, an old friend, Alpha (now called Beta), expresses his affection for his new home. After speaking with Ms. Meyers, Carl agrees to go on a date with her but quickly regrets his decision. Feeling anxious about dating after Ellie’s death, Carl confides in Dug, who offers various dog-related suggestions. Ultimately, Carl prepares for the date by buying chocolates and attempting to gather flowers from his garden.
As part of his preparations, Carl practices dancing with Dug and even dyes his hair black, which perplexes Dug. When Carl tries to cancel the date, Dug intervenes, insisting that Carl should go and reassuring him that Ms. Meyers will appreciate him. Feeling more relaxed, Carl accepts Dug’s offer to accompany him as backup. Before leaving, Carl has a heartfelt moment with a photo of Ellie, promising that she will always hold a special place in his heart as he embarks on this new adventure.
