**Storyline:**
Roger Porter (Washington), a young and somewhat naive Black man, is the long-lost son of Walter Whitney (Segal), a successful businessman living in the affluent, predominantly white community of San Marino, California. Walter, who is secretly Jewish, leads a frustrating life in his gated community, constantly pleading with his demanding wife for intimacy and tolerating his stepdaughter’s outrageous behavior. Roger appears at Walter’s office, revealing himself as the result of Walter’s past relationship with a Black woman, who has since passed away. Walter had abandoned Roger’s mother years ago to advance his career, pressured by his anti-Semitic father-in-law and boss, who threatened to ruin his professional prospects if he continued the relationship.
Attempting to make amends, Walter invites Roger to live with him and his wife, Vivian (Saint James), for the summer as a foster son. Vivian initially agrees but regrets her decision upon discovering Roger’s true identity. She expels Walter from their home, and her father fires him, stripping him of his car and credit cards. Walter’s lawyer, also his former best friend, abandons him to represent Vivian in the divorce, leaving Walter with only $68 and a referral to an African-American lawyer. With no other options, Walter and Roger move into a shabby motel, where Walter takes up manual labor to survive. Roger sells Walter’s golf clubs to finance their move to a rundown apartment in Watts. Meanwhile, Walter’s father-in-law monitors his every move, ensuring he receives no assistance from his former life, hoping Walter will abandon Roger and return to his old world.
