Description: In 2019, Chicago is under martial law following an extraterrestrial invasion. The Drummond family attempts to flee the city but crosses a barricade, leading to a confrontation with the aliens. The parents are killed, but the brothers, Gabriel and Rafe, are spared. The narrative then jumps to 2027, where humanity has submitted to the “Legislators,” the alien overlords who enforce the construction of “Closed Zones”—exclusive underground areas reserved for the aliens and accessible only to high-ranking officials.
Gabriel, now living in the impoverished Pilsen neighborhood, is approached by Special Branch Commander William Mulligan, who had collaborated with Gabriel’s father before the invasion. Mulligan suspects the Phoenix resistance group is still active despite official claims of its dissolution. Gabriel remains silent when questioned. Later, Gabriel meets a Phoenix member to sell a coded cigarette containing critical information obtained from a coworker. This encounter leads him to Wicker Park, where he reunites with his brother Rafe, the leader of the resistance. Rafe takes the cigarette and advises Gabriel to leave before the Unity Rally at Soldier Field, which Phoenix plans to target.
As Gabriel prepares to leave, Mulligan confronts him again, but Gabriel escapes and goes into hiding. The coded information from the cigarette allows Rafe’s team to access Chicago’s surveillance system and law enforcement deployment plans. During the Unity Rally, Phoenix uses an invisible alien explosive to attack the arriving aliens. While the initial assault seems successful, the city is quickly locked down in response.
