The story follows Sam Bowden, a lawyer in North Carolina, who lives with his wife, Leigh, and their teenage daughter, Danielle. During the trial, Sam, horrified by the crime, concealed evidence of the victim’s promiscuity, which could have reduced Cady’s sentence or led to his acquittal.
Unbeknownst to Sam, Cady, who was illiterate at the time of his conviction, has educated himself in prison. He studied law, becoming intelligent and determined, and even filed multiple unsuccessful appeals. Now free, Cady tracks Sam down and begins tormenting the Bowden family. He lurks near their home, and their dog is mysteriously killed. Sam tries to have Cady arrested, but the police lack evidence.
Cady’s aggression escalates when he violently attacks Lori, a courthouse clerk who harbors feelings for Sam. Despite Sam’s advice, Lori refuses to press charges, fearing public exposure and humiliation. Desperate, Sam hires a private investigator, Kersek, to monitor Cady.
Meanwhile, Cady manipulates Danielle by posing as her drama teacher, exploiting her teenage struggles. He lures her to the school theater, shares a joint with her, and kisses her, playing on her vulnerability. When Danielle’s parents discover the joint, her evasiveness about Cady’s actions push Sam to a breaking point. He agrees to Kersek’s plan to physically confront Cady, a move he had previously rejected.
