**Storyline:**
While studying urban legends, Helen Lyle, a semiotics graduate student in Chicago, discovers the tale of Candyman. According to the legend, summoning Candyman by saying his name five times in front of a mirror causes him to appear and kill the summoner using a hook attached to his severed right arm. Intrigued, Helen begins her research after hearing about Clara, a woman murdered while babysitting in her suburban home.
Further investigation leads Helen to Cabrini-Green, a notorious housing project, where two cleaners share rumors that Ruthie Jean, a resident, was killed by Candyman. Helen learns that 25 similar murders have occurred in the area. Doubting the legend, Helen and her friend Bernadette attempt the summoning ritual in Helen’s bathroom but nothing happens.
Helen and Bernadette collaborate on a thesis exploring how Cabrini-Green residents use the Candyman myth to cope with their struggles. During their visit to the site of Ruthie Jean’s murder, Helen finds a room filled with offerings left for Candyman. They also meet Anne-Marie McCoy, a single mother raising her infant son Anthony.
Later, Helen and her husband Trevor dine with Professor Philip Purcell, an expert on the Candyman legend. Purcell explains that Candyman was born in the late 1800s as the son of a slave and became a renowned artist. Tragically, after falling in love with and impregnating the daughter of a wealthy family, he was hunted by a lynch mob sent by her father. They severed his right hand, smeared him with honeycomb to attract bees, and stung him to death. His body was burned, and his ashes were scattered across the land where Cabrini-Green now stands.
