Description: Married couple Leonora and Jacob, played by Gitte Witt and Thomas Gullestad, reluctantly accept a suspicious invitation from the wealthy and unsettling Mathias, portrayed by Thorbjørn Harr. In the aftermath of a devastating nuclear war, Mathias offers free meals and entertainment to his guests at an eerie, abandoned luxury hotel. Mathias, though clearly malevolent, presents himself as the only viable option for survival, forcing his guests to confront their fears and uncertainties. The film serves as a metaphorical tale about maintaining optimism in dark times, though its narrative often feels repetitive and lacks emotional depth.
Despite its shortcomings, “Cadaver” succeeds in creating a chilling atmosphere. Writer and director Jarand Herdal crafts a haunting setting, particularly as Leonora becomes the central figure, separated from her family during their exploration of Mathias’ hotel. Jacob’s relatability adds to the tension, but it is Leonora’s unwavering belief in a positive outcome that drives the story. Her poignant declaration, “Because it has to be,” encapsulates the film’s theme of desperate hope amidst chaos. However, the film’s monotony and lack of engagement detract from its potential impact.
