Description: By the Sea, released in 2015, is a drama film set in 1960s France. It follows the story of an American couple, Vanessa, a former dancer, and Roland, a successful writer, who have been married for 14 years. They arrive at a coastal hotel, where Roland plans to work on a new story. However, their relationship is strained, with Vanessa being withdrawn and grieving for an unknown reason, while Roland struggles with her lack of interest in him and turns to alcohol.
During their stay, Roland befriends the local café owner, an elderly man who has lost his beloved wife but remains optimistic about life. The incident causes turmoil between the young couple and sparks a heated argument between Vanessa and Roland. Roland accuses Vanessa of acting out of envy for the young couple’s ability to have children, revealing deeper tensions in their marriage.
