**Plot Summary:**
In October 2007, United States Marine Corps Captain Sam Cahill prepares for his fourth deployment to Afghanistan. Married to his high school sweetheart, Grace, they raise their two young daughters, Isabelle and Maggie. Meanwhile, Sam’s brother, Tommy, a convicted felon, is released on parole just before Sam’s departure. During a family dinner, tensions arise as Grace’s dislike for Tommy becomes apparent, and their father, Hank, openly criticizes Tommy for his failures compared to Sam’s achievements.
While on duty, Sam’s Blackhawk helicopter is shot down in Helmand Province. He and Private Joe Willis survive but are captured and held prisoner by the Taliban. Presumed killed in action, Sam’s family holds a funeral. At the service, Hank’s drunken behavior leads to a confrontation with Tommy, who blames their father for pushing Sam into the Marines due to Hank’s own Vietnam War experience.
Tommy begins to rebuild his life, completing a kitchen renovation for Grace and mending his relationship with Hank. He also forms a bond with Grace and their nieces, Isabelle and Maggie. Although Grace and Tommy share a brief kiss, they refrain from furthering their attraction. Meanwhile, Sam and Joe endure brutal captivity, and Sam is forced to kill Joe under duress.
Eventually, Sam is rescued and returns home, but he struggles with severe post-traumatic stress disorder. His daughters grow fearful of him, and his paranoia strains his marriage. Sam also lies to Joe’s widow about her husband’s death, further complicating his reintegration into family life.
