Storyline:
In 1957, in New York City, Rudolf Abel is arrested and accused of spying for the Soviet Union. Insurance lawyer James B. Donovan is assigned to defend Abel to ensure the trial appears fair. Dedicated to the principle that every accused person deserves a strong defense, Donovan works tirelessly to represent Abel. He refuses to cooperate with the CIA’s attempts to breach client confidentiality.
Abel is ultimately convicted, but Donovan persuades the judge to avoid the death penalty, arguing that Abel had served his country honorably and might be valuable for a future prisoner exchange. Abel is sentenced to 30 years in prison. Donovan appeals the conviction to the Supreme Court, citing the lack of a search warrant for the evidence seized. Despite his efforts, the conviction is upheld, and Donovan and his family face harassment, including gunfire directed at their home.
In 1960, CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers, flying a top-secret U-2 spy plane, is shot down over the USSR. Captured and subjected to a show trial, Powers is sentenced to ten years, including three years in prison.
Later, Donovan receives a letter from East Germany, supposedly from Abel’s wife, thanking him and urging him to contact their lawyer, Vogel. The CIA interprets this as a backchannel message suggesting the USSR is willing to exchange Powers for Abel. Unofficially, Donovan is asked to travel to Berlin to negotiate the swap. He arrives just as the Berlin Wall is being constructed. Crossing into East Berlin, Donovan meets with a KGB officer and Vogel, who represents the East German Attorney General, to discuss the potential prisoner exchange.
