**Storyline:**
John Smith, a 14-year-old Guatemalan boy adopted and raised in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, by his loving parents, Brian and Joyce Smith, struggles with feelings of abandonment from his birth parents. His inner turmoil leads him to rebel against his family and teachers. In school, John’s class is assigned a project about their family backgrounds. Struggling with his identity, John fails to complete the assignment and gives a half-hearted presentation, admitting his adoption and lack of knowledge about his origins.
One day, John and his friends, Josh and Reiger, ignore a neighbor’s warning and venture onto a frozen lake. Tragedy strikes as the ice breaks, plunging them into the freezing water. While Josh and Reiger manage to escape, John becomes trapped beneath the surface. Rescuers initially give up hope, but one of them, Tommy Shine, hears a voice urging him to try again. He dives back in and miraculously pulls John out.
At the hospital, John shows no signs of life despite the medical team’s efforts. Dr. Sutterer allows Joyce a final moment to say goodbye. Holding her son, Joyce prays fervently, and just when all seems lost, a faint pulse returns. John is then transferred to a better-equipped hospital under the care of Dr. Garrett, an expert in such cases.
