**Storyline:**
On Sue’s birthday, no one seems to care. Her self-centered half-sister (Mila Kunis), her colleagues at the suicide hotline who celebrate someone else’s birthday instead, and her husband, Karl (Matthew Modine), all fail to acknowledge her special day. To make matters worse, Karl buys flowers for his mistress. When Sue tracks him to a motel, she catches him in the act, only for him to suddenly suffer a heart attack, leaving behind a bag full of cash.
Too overwhelmed to process the situation, Sue buries Karl’s body and the money under a swing set, cancels her dinner plans, and prepares her story. The next day, she visits the police station to report her husband missing, but Detective Cam Harris (Regina Hall) is too preoccupied to take her seriously, advising her to wait it out.
The film delves into Sue’s decision to conceal Karl’s death, a choice that’s never fully explained but drives the plot forward. Surprisingly, Sue becomes an overnight sensation by sharing her fabricated story about Karl’s disappearance with the media. In today’s world, however, it would likely take a more dramatic twist, like falsely claiming to have killed her husband, for someone like Sue to gain widespread attention.
Despite some glaring logic gaps, Amanda Idoko’s script delivers a series of unexpected turns, introducing a cast of quirky characters brought to life by a talented ensemble of comedic actors. From lesbian furniture dealers (Wanda Sykes and Ellen Barkin) to hilariously incompetent hitmen, the film offers a mix of humor and unpredictability.
