Description: Brave, released in 2012, is a captivating animated film set in Medieval Scotland. The story follows Princess Merida of the Dunbroch clan, who receives a bow and arrow from her father, King Fergus, on her sixth birthday. Her mother, Queen Elinor, disapproves of this gift. During an outing in the woods to retrieve a lost arrow, Merida encounters a mysterious will-o’-the-wisp. Shortly after, her family is attacked by Mor’du, a terrifying demon bear. While Fergus and his men fight off the beast, Merida and Elinor escape on horseback. The battle costs Fergus one of his legs.
A decade later, Merida, now a skilled archer and elder sister to triplet brothers—Harris, Hubert, and Hamish—learns she is to be betrothed to the son of one of her father’s allies. Elinor warns her that refusing the betrothal could bring harm to their kingdom. She recounts a tale of a prince whose pride and defiance led to the downfall of his realm.
When the allied clan chieftains and their sons arrive for the Highland games to compete for Merida’s hand, she challenges the tradition. Declaring herself eligible as the firstborn of her clan, she enters the archery contest and outperforms her suitors, embarrassing the other clans. After a fierce argument with Elinor, Merida flees into the forest, guided by wisps to the dwelling of an old witch. Desperate to change her fate, Merida obtains an enchanted cake from the witch.
Upon giving the cake to Elinor, her mother transforms into a bear, retaining her human consciousness but unable to speak. Merida returns to the witch’s hut, only to find it abandoned. She discovers a warning: unless she can “mend the bond torn by pride” before the second sunrise, the spell will become permanent. The film weaves a tale of courage, family, and self-discovery as Merida races against time to save her mother and her kingdom.
