Description: “Born on the Fourth of July,” released in 1989, tells the impactful story of Ron Kovic, based on his memoir. The film begins in 1956 in Massapequa, New York, where a young Ron celebrates his birthday on Independence Day with his family and friend Donna. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address in 1961, Ron decides to join the Marine Corps. While his mother supports his decision, his father, a World War II veteran, is troubled by it. After attending his prom with Donna, Ron leaves for basic training.
During his second tour in Vietnam in 1967, Ron, now a sergeant, and his unit mistakenly kill Vietnamese villagers, believing them to be enemies. In the chaos, Ron accidentally kills a young private in his platoon. Severely wounded in a firefight in 1968, Ron becomes paralyzed from the chest down and spends months recovering in a poorly maintained veterans hospital. Despite his efforts to walk again, he is confined to a wheelchair for life.
Returning home in 1969, Ron struggles with feelings of neglect and disillusionment, turning to alcohol. During an Independence Day parade, he is unable to finish his speech after a baby’s cry triggers a flashback to Vietnam. He later visits Donna in Syracuse, where they reconnect briefly before being separated during a protest against the Vietnam War.
The film is a powerful portrayal of Ron’s journey, exploring themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of war.
