Storyline:
A White Shepherd puppy named Bolt is adopted by Penny, an eight-year-old girl. Five years later, Bolt and Penny become stars of a popular TV series, *Bolt*, where they fight crime together. Bolt uses his superpowers to protect Penny from the villain, Dr. Calico, who kidnapped Penny’s father in the show. To make Bolt’s performance more realistic, the show’s producers have convinced him that everything in the series is real, making him believe he truly possesses superpowers, including a powerful sonic “superbark.”
After a cliffhanger episode leads Bolt to believe Penny has been kidnapped, he escapes from his on-set trailer in Hollywood. Unfortunately, he knocks himself unconscious and ends up trapped in a box of foam peanuts, which is shipped to New York City.
In New York, Bolt continues his search for Penny. To his shock, he discovers that his “superpowers” are ineffective in the real world. Along the way, he encounters Mittens, a cynical stray cat who intimidates pigeons into giving up their food. Mistaking Mittens for one of Calico’s “agents,” Bolt ties her to a leash and forces her to help him find Penny. Though Mittens initially thinks Bolt is delusional, the pair begins their journey westward by truck. Meanwhile, in Hollywood, producers replace Bolt with a less experienced look-alike so filming can resume. Penny is heartbroken by Bolt’s disappearance but reluctantly agrees to pause the search to keep production moving.
As Bolt experiences hunger for the first time, Mittens teaches him how to act like a cute, needy dog to get food at an RV park. They are later joined by Rhino, a fearless hamster and devoted Bolt fan. Rhino’s unwavering belief in Bolt reinforces the dog’s fantasies about himself, but their adventure continues as they strive to reunite Bolt with Penny.
