Description: Whodunit films are among the most challenging genres in cinema, transcending language and cultural boundaries. They require not only meticulous effort from filmmakers but also intense focus from viewers, who must actively engage in unraveling the plot. When a viewer’s investment is wasted due to a poorly executed product, it is more frustrating than with a typical film. A recent example of a well-crafted thriller is the Malayalam movie *Bhoothakaalam*.
On the other hand, *Blurr*—starring and produced by Taapsee Pannu—demonstrates how not to structure a thriller. Directed and co-written by Ajay Bahl, with Pawan Sony, the film is a remake of the 2010 Spanish movie *Julia’s Eyes*. The story follows a blind girl who commits suicide under mysterious circumstances, prompting her sister to uncover the truth while delving into the same dangerous situation. While the film opens with a haunting scene and sets up an intriguing premise, it quickly falls into predictable patterns.
The narrative relies on generic plot twists and coincidences, offering no innovation in storytelling. For instance, Taapsee’s character enters a room where blind women are discussing her sister’s death in extensive detail, including specific locations—an implausible scenario. Such moments diminish the film’s potential to deliver a unique thriller experience, leaving viewers unsatisfied.
